Slingerz FC will clash with their Linden counterparts, Netrockers FC, in the feature attraction, while Milerock FC go head to head with Topp XX when the action in the Slingerz Football Club/National Association of Women’s Football ‘Goal for Gold’ football extravaganza continues at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, Linden, this evening.
Milerock will bank on its strike force of Clarence Huggins and Jermaine Grandison, while Jermaine Fordyce will shore up the midfield position. Darius Frank is expected to be between the uprights as he attempts to minimize the opposition’s chances of scoring.
However, they will have to contend with the opposition which boasts such players as Quacy Johnson and Travis Waterton playing up front, while Ruel Williams and Keon Sears will patrol the midfield area. The defence cordon will be manned by Trenton Lashley and Shawn Daniels while Carlos Brown will be positioned between the uprights.
Meanwhile, fans were entertained by two action packed encounters when the action shifted to the Blairmont Community Centre Ground, Sunday evening last. Pele FC relegated Fruta Conquerors FC to the back burner with a 3-1 defeat after Keoma Gravesande (24th); Leon Fredericks (28th) and Okenie Fraser (76th) breached their custodian. Jermaine Junior pulled one back for Fruta Conquerors in the 5th minute of added on time.
The Guyana Defence Force and Rosignol United then battled to a 3-3 stalemate during regulation time after goals from Desford Williams (60th), Warren Gilkes (85th), and Eusi Phillips (74th) for the Army and Delroy Fraser ( 35th & 64th) and Justin Collin in the 65th for Rosignol United. The soldiers then stitched in two goals during extra time off the boots of Eusi Phillips (74th & 110th) and Warren Gilkes (85th) before Sherwyn Lawson scored in the 112th to seal the deal 5-3.
Meanwhile, the administrators have said that action in the women’s segment of the tournament gets underway on Sunday August 25 next. The fixtures would be released during the week. Earlier, President of the women’s association, Vanessa Dickenson, had exuded confidence that her affiliates would bring excitement to the tournament. This was moments after receiving tangible sponsorship from Ansa McAl.
The male team will battle for a first prize of two million dollars, while the 3rd and 4th place finishers receive $500,000 and $300,000 respectively. Ansa McAl has joined forces with Talk Is Cheap & Money Gram and Star Party Rentals to offset the expenses associated with the event.
