A total of 75 children from Sophia were presented with awards and certificates for their participation in the University of Guyana’s ninth edition of the ‘Reading is Fun’ programme.
During a simple closing ceremony at the Turkeyen Campus on Friday, Matthew Thompson, Kenroy Davis, Kizza McLeod, Shania Eastman, Ezekiel Lacon and Alonzo Clarkson all received awards for being outstanding participants of the programme which also dealt with Phonics, Spelling, Comprehension and the creative arts.
“Reading is Fun” also saw Shkeam Anys, Sheltisha Davison, Clive Knight, Maranda Williams, Sabita Palakdari, and Stacey Smartt being awarded for being the most improved of all 75 participants.
The programme is sponsored solely by Courts Guyana Incorporated, the entity which, over the past four years, has been assisting with the funding for books, meals, stationery, and other items that the children would need for the approaching school term.
Spearheaded by the University of Guyana’s Library staff, “Reading is Fun” is aimed at improving the reading and educational foundation of young children from less fortunate environs.
According to Librarian, Ms Gwyneth George, the programme has, over the years, received much enthusiasm from the children, as well as overwhelming, and surprisingly sustained support from their parents
The programme also saw the country’s top three National Grade Six Assessment performers of 2013 posing as mentors.
