Dear Editor,
I write to bring to light publicly an issue that has been spiraling out of control which the Tuschen/Uivtlugt Neighbourhood Democratic Council is currently dealing with.
I am 65 years old man who has been suffering from a stroke for the past seven years and lives at 236 Zeelugt Public Road East Bank Essequibo with my wife, daughter and son-in-law.
On the 10th March 2013, my son-in-law made a report to the NDC concerning my neighbour’s building. The man is building his house less than four feet away from my fence and every time the NDC is contacted about this situation, they seem to be doing nothing.
It was only after the Local Government Ministry was contacted that the NDC sent my neighbour a notice to stop construction on the 18th April 2013.
But despite the notice the man continued with his building. The NDC was informed time and time again, and all they keep saying is that they are investigating the matter.
On the 24th May, 2013 my daughter and son-in-law met with the Regional Chairman of Region Three Mr. Julius Faerber and explained this matter and they were assured the Regional Chairman that he would investigate and visit the area but nothing was done.
My neighbour then proceeded to build a zinc fence on the Government reserve and a report was made to the Public Health Officer of the said NDC. Nothing was done about this.
But on the 2nd of July 2013 a notice was sent to my son-in-law from the NDC giving him seven days to build our fence according to the building regulation, and if we fail to comply the NDC will take legal action against him. My daughter and son-in-law then went back on the 3rd July 2013 to speak with the REO concerning the matter and instead the Vice Chairman spoke to them. The Vice Chairman tried persuading them by saying that the PPP will get three votes less if my neighbour were to break his building and build according to the building regulation.
So that clearly shows us that it’s about the number of votes and not what is legal and illegal.
My daughter and her husband subsequently went to the Ministry of Local Government to ask what was the position with the matter.
When they asked to speak with the Permanent Secretary, his secretary said the PS was going out and the Permanent Secretary walked past them without saying anything to them.
They were then told to go and lodge a complaint with Mr. Puran Persaud, who later told him that the matter is a political thing and he should write a letter to Minister Ganga Persaud.
A letter was then written to Minister Ganga Persaud on the 11th July 2013 explaining this matter and asking for his intervention. But to date we have not received response.
My neighbor has clearly been breaching the building regulations and continues to breach the order issued by the NDC.
