Marketing Manager of Bryden & Fernandes Mark Kendall and dozens of cycling fans and supporters were treated to the Orville Hinds brand of cycling when the Team United Cycle Club member blistered the field to win the Bryden & Fernandes Classic feature 30-lap race around the Seawall Bandstand Circuit yesterday afternoon.

This inaugural event turned out to be a major success with Hinds’ performance capping a fine day to the extent that the former Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club rider lapped all but three (Michael Anthony, Robin Persaud & Godfrey Pollydore) riders in the field; a truly wonderful display of strategic riding.
Hinds, who won the National Road Race champion title some two years ago and found the going tough ever since, has been showing consistent form this season. He was nowhere in the reckoning before lap 17. Up until then, proceedings were dominated by Godfrey Pollydore, Alonzo Greaves, Robin Persaud, Albert Philander, Akeem Arthur, Michael Anthony and Shaquel Agard; the lead changing hands at varying intervals.
The Grove East Bank based Team United member {Hinds} stuck in with the leading quartet (Anthony, Persaud, Pollydore) up until the beginning of lap 24 when he made his move; his rivals didn’t have the energy to pursue their man, only 2013 Junior Caribbean bronze medalist and Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club team member Michael Anthony tried but he was no match as the lead that was created was way too much to overcome.
Anthony came in a distant second followed by Godfrey Pollydore further back in third. Robin Persaud, Shaquel Agard and Alonzo Greaves closed out the top six positions. Pollydore took four of the 10 prime prizes, Hinds three with one apiece for Persaud, Agard and Greaves.
It was a good day in terms of returns for Team United as they also won the Team Time Trials from Continental Cycle Club (CCC) and Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club (LBFCC) respectively.
The quartet of the Hinds brothers, Orville and Delroy, Hamza Eastman and Albert Philander combined in a calculated way to clock 8 Minutes 04.10 Seconds. Second was CCC in 8 Minutes 14.63 Seconds and third LBFCC in 8 Minutes 41.75 Seconds.
Another Team United rider, Delroy Hinds won the Category 4 / Junior contest; Akeem Wilkinson and Hamza Eastman placed 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Pollydore was successful in the Win and Out contest which he took ahead of Greaves and Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay in that order. Pollydore was tops in the Category 1 – 3 showdown, crossing the line before Hinds and John Charles.
The best Mountain Bike rider on the day was Ozia Macaullay; Stephano Husbands and Julio Melville placed 2nd and 3rd.
Assisting with the presentation of prizes was Bryden & Fernandes Marketing Manager Mark Kendall and Roraima Bikers Club Patron George Humphrey among others. Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) President Cheryl Thompson was on hand to enjoy the day’s proceedings.
Kendall congratulated the winners and other leading performers on the day, noting that Bryden & Fernandes was very pleased to be associated with the event which brought out the best riders in Guyana.
Organising club, Roraima Bikers, came in for praise for the professional manner in which proceedings were conducted. Traffic ranks of the Guyana Police Force were also complimented for doing their bit to ensure a successful day of riding.
There was one incident which saw a fan being hit in his head by a falling piece of debris from the deteriorating roof of the Bandstand which is incidentally maintained by the Guyana Police Force. The individual was rushed to the hospital but later returned to enjoy the action.
The Seawall Bandstand has been around for many years and has been a venue where the Guyana Police Force Band would perform for the public back in the day and to a lesser extent now. This facility is in need of an upgrade and consistent maintenance.
