Preparations are continuing in earnest as the 7th Annual Guyana Cup, with a jumbo-sized $30M in cash and prizes on offer, is just a short time away.
The event fixed for August 25 at the Port Mourant Turf Club, promises to add to the excitement and entertainment programme for these August holidays.
The Guyana Cup since its introduction some seven years ago has been setting an unprecedented pace for other sponsors to follow with massive injection of funds by the Jumbo Jet establishment and other cooperate sponsors. This year the organizers have come up with by far the largest prize package in the country in a sporting event which will see nine races carded for the day and already close to 100 of the country’s best racehorses entered.
A number of new imports are expected to take to the track in their quest for the big money on offer. A number of jockeys from overseas including, Canada, Jamaica, Trinidad, USA and Barbados along with a number of overseas based riders will be making the trek home to be a part of the event, with some already in the country.
The events listed for the day are the feature B and lower with a sumptuous $7M prize package with $3.5M and the Guyana Cup trophy set aside for the winner over 1700M.
The other events are -the co-feature 1600M event for 3-yr old horses, bred and born in Guyana and the West Indies, the organizers have put up $2.5M and trophy.
The Two year old 1000M event for West Indies Bred horses for a $1.5M top prize and trophy.
The E class and lower 1400M event for a winning take of $1M top prize and trophy.
There is a race for F class Horses with the winner getting $900,000 and trophy over 1000M, the G 3 and lower1200M event with the winner getting $800,000 and trophy.
The second three year old event is for Guyana bred horses and has a $600,000 price tag along with trophy for the top runner over 1200M.
The H and Lower 1000M race for a winning purse of $400,000 and trophy, along with the ‘I’ and lower 1200M event for a top prize of $300,000 and trophy. The final race has $200,000 plus trophy at stake for the winner of the JKL event over 1200M.
Apart from the riveting horseracing action expected on the track, there will also be a lot of added attractions including for both adults and kids. There will also be giveaways for the lucky and early patrons and horse owners.
The activity, which has become a calendar event, has been organized also to capture the thousands of overseas based Guyanese, holiday seekers and tourists who will throng the country at this time of the year. The event is expected to attract over 10,000 spectators.
The top Jockey along with the runner up, the top stable and champion trainer will all be presented with accolades compliments of the Trophy Stall, Bourda Market and the organizers. Entries close today, Saturday, August 17. The event will be held under the rules of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority
