The first round of the Regional Women’s Twenty20 concluded yesterday with four matches at two venues in Grenada, and Guyana were in winners’ row beating Trinidad and Tobago by 27 runs in their encounter.
Playing at the Tanteen ground, Guyana, led by 37 from Berbician Shemaine Campbell and 29 from inform Demerara Captain June Ogle, reached 127-4 off their allotted 20 overs before left-arm pacer Erva Giddings grabbed 4-27 to restrict the girls from Carnival country to 100-9 when their overs expired.
At Progress Park, Barbados edged to victory in a low-scoring match against recently crowned Regional Women’s Super50 champions, Jamaica for an early win. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, opener, Kycia Knight was the lone highlight for the Bajans.
The Barbadians constantly lost wickets and were setback in their bid to set a competitive total. Kycia Knight was the only batter to get into double figures, scoring a patient 31 runs from 58 balls. And even she had to work hard, running all of her runs.
Siblings Kyshonna Knight and Pamela Levine, who both made eight, were the next best contributors with the bat for Barbados. Chedean Nation grabbed 3-17 from her four overs as the Bajans were restricted to 70/9 from their 20 overs.
But the Jamaican batters would not do much better. They slipped to 24/3 and failed to recover. Chinelle Henry top scored for Jamaicans with 21. Chedean Nation and Jodi Ann Morgan both made ten. Shanna Thompson, Deandra Dottin and Danielle Small all took two wickets as the Bajans restricted Jamaica to 65 all out in 19.5 overs. Barbados won by 15 runs.
At Tanteen in the morning game, St Vincent and the Grenadines dismissed St Lucia easily after winning the toss and elected to field.
The St Lucians were 20/3 and never recovered. It was left to Number nine batter, Julia Simon, to hit 20 runs from 23 balls at the end to propel the scoring. She had two fours in her knock. Nerissa Crafton chipped in with 19 as St Lucia were restricted to 85/8 from their 20 overs.
Leading the destruction with the ball for SVG were Latoya Providence (3-18) and Sheree Ann John (3-15). In response, SVG made light work of the victory target, losing just the wicket of Latoya Providence for 18. But her fellow opening partner, Captain Juliana Nero led the charge to victory.
Nero struck seven fours in her unbeaten knock of 56, batting some 45 balls. Terisha Lavia stayed with her skipper to the end, finishing on eight. Nicole St Prix had just the one wicket for the St Lucians, finishing with 1-15 from her four overs. SVG got to their target with over four overs to spare.
And hosts Grenada beat Dominica in the day’s other match at Progress Park.
