The fourth edition of the Boyce and Jefford Track and Field Classic is set for an explosive start today from 13:00hrs at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary, and coaches from the respective clubs are confident of their team chances heading into the two day mega event.
Coach for defending champions, Police, Lyndon Wilson, is confident that his team will defend their title as he sees his athletes well prepared for the event.
Wilson pointed out that, “Judging from two week ago at the Police Championships I believe we are ready to defend our title, we already have two persons for each event and tomorrow (today) I want them (the athletes) to bring their A game and qualify for the finals on Sunday.”
He said, “We have the confidence that we can do it but we are not underrating any other team we know they will come gunning for us but we have prepared physically and mentally for it.”
Co-coach Sham Johnny of the Running Brave Athletics Club (RBAC), who are tipped to give Police a run for the title, stated that his club is definitely ready.
“We are prepared and focused right now, the good thing about us is that we do not have any injuries, everybody is feeling good and we want them to bring their A game. All we want as a club is no technical errors and a clean sport with no hiccups, but we are focused and ready for all, our small club is ready,” Johnny said.
Robert Chisholm, Coach of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) sport Club, who has always been in the top three since the genesis of the event, was a bit skeptical about his club’s chances but assured that they will give their best to represent the army.
“Well we don’t really have a big team this year because some of our athletes are on courses at the moment. The weather has also caused us to not prepare the way we would like but we will definitely give a good account of ourselves,” Chisholm noted.
Moses Pantlitz, coach of the Christianburg Wismar Secondary School track club, said that while it will be tough for his team, because of their young age, he still believes they can finish third in the ranking.
“We went through our paces and we had good preparation it is now up to the athletes to go out and perform. Our club is pretty young and I know for them to go up against the seniors is going to be tough but we are looking for somewhere between third to fifth,” Pantlitz stated.
The event has attracted the best athletes locally and is expected to produce the best athletics in Guyana coupled with the participation of athletes from Trinidad, Grenada and Suriname.
The heats along with a few finals will be run today, while the finals of those preliminary events will be held tomorrow at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground, Linden from 14:00hrs.
