Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United FC breezed past Grove Hi-Tec 3-0 while Western Tigers emulated their feat with a 2-1 victory over Seawall FC to inch towards championship honours when the Slingertz Football Club/National Association of Women’s Football ‘Goal for Gold’ football extravaganza continued at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground, Wednesday evening last.
Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams netted a double in the 8th and 15th minute while Manasseh Primo scored in the 25th minute to seal the deal for Alpha while Phillip Rowley opened Western Tiger’s account two minutes into the encounter Hubert Pedro emulating his feat in the 81st. Clement Brown saved some face for Seawall FC with a strike three minutes to full time.
Alpha commenced the game with their trademark speed and agility, interspersed with aggression but Grove Hi Tec refused to be browbeaten and matched their determination and skill. Legs were still fresh when Abrams blazed down the left flank and gently tapped in Alpha’s first success.
The quintessential striker was a thorn in Grove Hi Tec side and seven minutes after his first success, sprinted down the centre of the field and delivered a thunderous kick that easily sped past the outstretched hands of the Grove custodian to send his team 2 up.
All this time Dwight Peters was working hard down the right flank and his opportunity eventually came when he kicked the ball pinpoint in front of the opposition’s goal mouth but his team mates were every other place but there.
The Grove Hi Tec boys upped their aggression and their strike force, consisting of Joel Dick and Clive Matthews tested Alpha custodian on several occasions but he was up to the task and kept the ball out.
Alpha sought to push their 2-0 advantage further and succeeded when Chris Camacho performed a solo right into the opposition’s berth before gifting a pass to Primo who diligently completed the play for Alpha before the players went in at the interval.
The dominance of the Alpha team in the first session had set the pace for an Alpha goal fest and the fans anticipated a total shutdown. This was not to be as the Grove boys held their own and though they failed to breach the Alpha fortress, they managed to stave off any further mishap and exited the tournament with some pride intact.
The action continues tonight at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground with two Linden teams, Milerock and Bakewell Topp XX facing off at 18:30hrs followed by the feature attraction between Slingertz FC and Netrockers at 20:00hrs. The teams are battling for a top prize of three million dollars.
