Football fans are in for a real treat when the Slingertz Football Club/National Association of Women’s Football ‘Goal for Gold’ extravaganza continues at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground tonight with two potentially scorching matches.
When the curtains go up at 18:30hrs, Western Tigers will match skills with Seawall FC followed by the highly anticipated Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United/Grove Hi-Tec shindig. Fans would not want to miss the feature duel which promises to be a scorcher.
Already touted to be the best local unit presently, ‘The Hammers,’ emboldened by their performance in the just concluded Super league where they clinched the honours, will take to the field overflowing with confidence.
Sporting a defensive line-up with the likes of Quincy Madramootoo and Quincy Adams, Alpha could be a terrifying force. Add midfielders, Philbert Moffatt and Anthony Benfield and the Alpha boys will feel that their chances are super good.
The dependable strikers, Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams and Manessah Primo are also expected to strengthen the line up and pose some problems for their adversaries.
Grove Hi Tec might not be regarded in the same awe as their opponents but Coach, Herris Allen is brimming with confidence. He assured that he could depend on central defense player, Trevor Jones as well as his right defense, Travis Jones. Mr. Allen is also placing great confidence in Sherman Doris, John Matthews and Orson Franscois, all competent players on their day.
Simon’s counterpart, Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover said that his men have been training intensely for the encounter. He reminded that they are fresh from the championship victory in the just concluded GFF Super league and are ready to take on whosoever crosses their path.
Pressed for a response, Coach Simon just chuckled and replied, “We are not scared of Alpha; they may have a good team on paper but we are out to prove that the game is played on the field.”
Indeed, both teams are good and ready to throw down the gauntlet and with the added incentive of two million dollars for the winners they will be keen to approach the match with vigor.
The tournament is two tiered in nature with 16 male teams and 8 women teams battling for respective honours.
