– top Region #10 Grade Six performers Zoe Sills & Tamicka Rutherford rewarded
Showing that they are not only interested in the achievements of athletes on the field but also in the classroom; the US based Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Memorial Foundation on Wednesday last handed over $100,000 in cash incentives to Watooka Day Primary School’s Zoe Sills and Jamicka Rutherford, the joint top performers at this year’s National Grade Six Assessment Examination.
The contribution is aimed at assisting the duo as they prepare for the transition to the secondary school level at the nation’s top schools. Making the presentation on behalf of the donor was US based Robert ‘Drygo’ Taylor, a former Linden resident.
Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond was one of the best football players ever from Mackenzie, Linden and was the first to don national colours at the senior national level representing Guyana in the late 1960s.
Taylor told the gathering at the Linden Enterprise Network (LEN) building that they are very interested in the academic growth of youths and that’s why they are recognizing and encouraging the top performers from the Upper Demerara/Upper Berbice), region.
Father of Zoe Sills, Pastor Selwyn Sills accepted on her behalf. Sills thanked the organisation for their intervention and wished them well, while Tamicka Rutherford was there along with her mother, Jamella Bailey. Tamicka also expressed her gratitude.
James Craig, the Linden Chapter Coordinator for the Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Foundation informed the gathering that much more will be done by the Foundation as they intend to have competitions played at the Under-13 and 15 levels in the near future among the schools in the Bauxite Mining Town and not just the annual Under-18 championship which is in its 5th year.
