Ray Millington of the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) showed that the minor problems that led to him being off the road for a few months is far behind him as he excelled to win the inaugural Council of Friends of New Amsterdam (COFONA) Emancipation 45-miles cycle road race which was organised by the Flying Ace Cycle Club.
Millington in his second race since being back on saddles, finished second in that event two weeks ago, upped his game and won the race in a time of one hour, fifty seven minutes and fifty eight seconds (1:57:58).
The rider showed that he is one of the top wheelers in Berbice as he out-sprinted four other riders that included club mate Neil Reece and Dwight Holder and Juban Crawford from Trojan Cycle Club to win the event.
The race pedaled off from Main and Alexander Street in New Amsterdam with the riders being sent on their way by President of COFONA, Dr. Leonard Lewis, as they journeyed to the No 43 Bridge before returning to its place of origin.
Andrew Hicks broke away early, but was soon roped in by the chasing pack. The four cyclists soon broke away from the rest of the field to establish a decent lead. The four stayed together until the turnaround point. From then on it was a cat and mouse game as the leaders took turns to establish mini breaks, but were soon caught by the others.
With the strong wind and the blistering sun on their backs, the riders continued at the bruising pace. There was then a fierce sprint home for the finishing line with Millington coming home ahead of Holder, Reece and Crawford with Syborne Fernandes coming in fifth.
Fernandes was the first veteran to cross the finish line. Elijah Brijader was the first among the juniors.
The winners were presented with their accolades by Dr. Leonard Lewis and other members of the organisation. Dr. Lewis in a brief address thanked the cyclists for participating and the FACC for organising the event. He stated that efforts will be made to do what has to be done to ensure the riders get needed competitive practice. He promised that the COFONA organisation will be working closely with the relevant personnel to achieve their goals.
Co-sponsor, Polly Ann Shultz of Polly’s Delight, also expressed her delight and gratitude for being able to be a part of the event. Coordinator of the event and coach of the FACC, Randolph Roberts, thanked the sponsors for choosing his organisation to work with. He gave his commitment and expressed his willingness to continue working with them in the future. He promised with the necessary assistance a bigger event next year.
All the speakers thanked the police led by Assistant Superintendent Ashram and ranks for their exceptional work and assistance during the event which was incident free. (Samuel Whyte)
