John Beaton, 50, of Lot 55 Albouys Street, Albouystown, was yesterday sentenced to prison after he pleaded guilty to being in possession of 7 grams of cannabis.
Beaton was placed before Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan to answer to two charges, the particulars of which stated that on August 10, at Albouys Street, Albouystown, he had in his possession 7 grams of cannabis.
The defendant however, pleaded not guilty to the second charge which stated that he had ¼ gram of cocaine in his possession.
According to Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones, on the day in question, police were conducting raids throughout the city for illegal drugs and ammunition. When officers arrived at the defendant’s home, they requested a search and he agreed. A bag containing money was subsequently discovered in a sink. Beaton was arrested and taken to the Criminal Investigation Department at Eve Leary where the cannabis was weighed in his presence and amounted to 7 grams. He was then charged for the said offence.
Beaton was denied bail for the cocaine charge and is expected to return to court for the commencement of his trial on September 11 before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry.
With regard to the charge for possession of cannabis, the defendant was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and fined $10,000.
