Dear Editor,
Despite the passage of the Hydro-Electric Power (Amendment) Bill by the National Assembly, WPA continues to believe that the Amaila Falls project is ill-conceived, flawed and would be disastrous for the Guyanese economy.
We reiterate our position that the project should be abandoned before it’s too late. WPA regrets that the joint-opposition did not take a common stand against the project, but salutes the APNU for not caving under pressure. The withdrawal of Sithe Global does not seem to deter the PPPC from pressing ahead with the project.
WPA, therefore, believes that there should be continued public pressure on the government to scrap the project. Towards this end the party plans to intensify the public discourse on the project.
WPA party will host a symposium on the project on Friday August 16 at 5:30 pm at St Stanislaus School Auditorium, Brickdam, Georgetown. Speakers include Dr. Clive Thomas, Dr. Rishi Thakur and Mr. Carl Greenidge. WPA’s publication on the project “Eight Essays on the Political Economy of the Amaila Falls Project” will be launched at the symposium. Copies can be pre-ordered by calling the WPA’s office 227-4608/4609.
