A large crowd, mostly consisting of supporters of the Den Amstel community, trooped to the Community Centre ground in their area in support of their team when the curtains went up on the Slingerz Football Club/National Association of Women’s Footballers ‘Goal for Gold football
championships, but left a disappointed bunch after the home team suffered a3-2 defeat to Riddim Squad, via the penalty route, when activities in that tournament got underway Saturday evening last. Camptown FC enjoyed better fortunes than Den Amstel, shutting down Uitvlugt 5-0 to take the spoils in the feature attraction.
Activities got underway a little later that advertised after the organizers were confronted with teething problems which was quickly resolved allowing the teams for the opening encounter, Riddim Squad and Den Amstel, to take to the field. There were many missed opportunities from both teams resulting in a nil all stalemate at the half. When the players failed to change the score line in the second half and consequently, extra time, penalties were taken and Riddim Squad prevailed.
Camptown ball weavers removed the need for extra time after Runnel Gordon opened their account in the 4th minute. Four minutes later, Malcolm Wilson sent his team 2 up and Jamal Greaves pushed the game further away from Uitvlugt with a stinger in the 34th minute. Devon Forde sealed the deal with a brace in the 37th and 40th minutes.
Activities continue this Wednesday August 14 when Alpha United tackle Grove Hi Tec in the feature attraction that also brings together BK Western Tigers and Seawalls in a highly anticipated thriller. The venue has been shifted to the GFC Ground and a large crowd is anticipated as these two matches are shaping up to be crowd pleasers.
The women’s segment of the championships kicks off shortly as the organizers are bent on developing this sector of the sport. The winners of the male tournament receive two million dollars with the runners up receiving one million dollars. The third and fourth place finishers receive $500,000 and $300,000 respectively.
Ansa McAl has contributed largely to the success of the tournament with other contributions coming from Star Party Rental of Craig Street Campbellville and Eton Cordis of the Talk is Cheap and Money Gram, Alexander Street, Kitty respectively.
