The body of Jules Walker, 33 of Lot 7 Ogle Front East Coast Demerara was recovered in the Princes Street canal in close proximity to a koker that facilitates drainage into the Demerara River around 19:15 hours yesterday.
The discovery ended hours of speculation that walker’s body which was first spotted in a drain at the corner of Princes and High Streets near the Infinity Gas Station on Saturday morning had floated away into the nearby river.
The body of the man, who went missing on Friday, bore visible marks of violence.
This newspaper understands that Walker disappeared following a heated disagreement with someone at a popular city hangout spot.
At the time he was having his usual Friday night hang with his friends.
The young man, who once resided with his sister, Alex Walker, was last seen at around 2: am on Saturday at a city fish shop.
He was clad in blue Jeans, white cap, white T- Shirt as well as a pair of blue and white sneakers.
On Saturday commuters had seen a body bearing the depiction of Walker’s attire, floating near the canal at Princes and High Streets.
Tracey Jones, a Charlestown resident said that her 12 year old nephew raised an alarm after he saw the man’s floating body.
“We de walking to town and me nephew see de body and we start scream, and then we call de police and when de police come, de rain start fall hard and de water push the body down de canal.”
According to the woman, the police were initially reluctant to remove the corpse.
“They busy arguing is who jurisdiction de body in. Ruimveldt saying Brickdam and so…while de body floating away.”
According to Jones, the police went away and never returned.
“De rain buss, when de police de talking on he phone …a man even offer fuh go in the trench and tek out de body but de police ain’t pay he no mind.”
However, yesterday after hours of frantic and extended searching, the body which was apparently pushed towards the mouth of the Demerara River, surfaced.
Relatives and other concerned persons, who learnt about the body via the media converged to the scene.
They solicited assistance from the Guyana Fire Service, and a few Charlestown youths who assisted in retrieving the corpse.
Meanwhile, relatives are trying to figure out who would want to harm, Jules Walker since the young man had no known enemies.
Kaieteur News understands that Walker had a speech impediment, and was unemployed at the time of his death.
There are reports that Walker was murdered and then dumped in the drain while others believe that he fell into the drain, knocking himself unconscious.
Pamela Anderson, another resident of the Charlestown area, used the opportunity to appeal for regular patrol by the police.
“This area need more police vigilance because all kind of thing does happen here, robbery, prostitution and even murder.”
