Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel proved a bit too hot for the Guyana Amazon Warriors in their match of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League (LCPL) played at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain Trinidad yesterday.
The Red Steel won the toss and chose to bat and got off to a good start, eventually rallying to 159 for 4 off their 20 overs. They were piloted to the decent total by Kevin O’Brien who hammered 70 off 47 balls which included two fours and six sixes. He got support from Ross Taylor with an unbeaten 39 off 27 deliveries, while Adrian Barath chipped in with 29. The pick of the Warriors bowlers was Kishmar Santokie with 2 for 25 off his four overs.
Set 160 for victory, the Amazon Warriors got off to a good start with Lendl Simmons and Martin Guptill keeping up a healthy run rate. After a few lusty blows, Simmons departed for 18 from 10 balls and the pressure began to build on the Warriors. James Franklin 60 not out off 34 balls, which included five fours and three sixes with late order help from Christopher Barnwell, 23 off 18, brought the Amazon Warriors within four of the required mark as the Red Steel took their first victory of the competition. Mohammad Hafeez hit 35 for the Warriors. Red Steel Skipper Dwayne Bravo took 2 for 21 to lead the bowling of his team.
The tournament continues today with St. Lucia Zouks battling Jamaica Tallawahs from 8:00 pm at the Beausejour Cricket Ground in Castries, St. Lucia.
Scores: Red Steel 159/4 (20/20 ov); Guyana Amazon Warriors 156/4 (20.0/20 ov)
Result: Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel won by 3 runs.
