Surinamese footballers turned in a determined display to defeat their Guyanese counterparts 2-1 and cart off the honours when the two teams clashed in the Inter Guiana Games football encounter at the Police Sports Club Ground Eve Leary yesterday afternoon.
Watched by a medium sized crowd that included Prime Minister, Samuel Hinds, Director of Youth and Sports, Neil Kumar and Ismanto Adna, Suriname Minister of Sport, Dutch players, Edward Sergino and S Jonathon breached the Guyanese berth in the 23rd and 33rd minutes, while Jamal Harvey scored for the local side in the 77th minute.
Indeed Henry was the livewire for the Guyanese team and it came as no surprise when he scored for his team. However, he failed to receive the requisite support from his team mates as many of them were guilty of tardy play and on too many occasions relinquished clear advantages because of poor ball control. Kareem Knights was a typical example after collecting a dolly of a pass before racing to the opposition’s berth. Anxiety got the better of him and the wayward kick that followed slid along the right side of the Surinamese goal.
In the meantime the Surinamese were working in tandem with clever combinations and after one such power play, they almost went two up compliments of Jonathon’s strike but the ball slammed into the goalpost and back into play. Suriname’s second goal came from a corner kick that sailed through the air for Sergino to deftly tuck in a ferocious header.
Thereafter, the locals turned in a scrappy display that witnessed many botched chances none more glaring than when with approximately 20 minutes to the final whistle, captain of the local squad, Andre Hector was fed a humdinger of a pass just in front of the Surinamese goal; his teammates watched in horror as he botched the opportunity with a wayward strike.
It proved to be a costly miss as the Surinamese refused to relinquish possession even as the clock ticked away the time. The Guyanese somehow rose from their lethargy and struggled to equalize the situation but the Dutch team proved to be a moiré tactical and determined bunch and their 2-1 victory was fitting reward for their hard work.
