Says Sean Devers
At 24, Off-spinning all-rounder Steven Jacobs should make his Limacol Caribbean Premier League (LCPL) debut for the Guyana Amazon Warriors on Friday as the action shifts to the Queens Park Oval in the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad & Tobago when the South American based team face-off again with T&T’s Red Steel.
Head Coach Roger Harper and his assistant Curtly Ambrose could make some changes to the Warriors batting line-up for this match since, apart from Lendl Simmons and Skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan, the batting remains inconsistent.
Simmons, the leading run scorer in the competition, averages 73.50 but only Sarwan (Ave. 53.00) of the other batsmen averages above 30.
Guyana posted scores of 155-5 against T&T’s Red Steel, 126-6 against St Lucia’s Zouks and 118-2 against the Jamaica’s Tallawahs and although the pitches in Trinidad should be better for batting they are not likely to be much different for the ones used at Providence.
Jacobs, who failed to play a match in the 2010 Regional T20 tournament when Guyana qualified for the Champions League T20 in South Africa, could replace fellow Guyanese Narsingh Deonarine or Pakistani Mohammed Hafeez in the side.
Deonarine has managed just a single from his three matches and has taken 1-20 from three overs while Hafeez has scored just 33 runs from his three innings and taken 1-79 from 11.3 overs; he conceded consecutive sixes off the bat of Misbah Ul Haq who helped St Lucia to a five-wicket win in Guyana’s last match.
Jacobs has bowled the most maidens (6) since making his debut in this format of regional cricket three years ago in South Africa and his off-spin has often been vital to Guyana’s success with the new ball, a role being performed presently by Hafeez.
Jacobs is also a competent middle order batsman and has a strike rate of just under 100 from 16 matches, his presence in the side could lift the team’s energy level. The bowlers (apart from South African James Franklyn who is Guyana’s most expensive bowler and Hafeez) have done a good job so far.
Now it is time for the batsmen to pull their weight and changes are recommended after the same X1 played all three games in Guyana.
