Sudesh Fitzgerald played undefeated when the Guyana Darts Association (GDA) in collaboration with the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) held a tournament last Friday night, at the latter Headquarters on Thomas Road.
Fitzgerald not only won the Open Singles category where he once again defeated Madhoo, but also teamed up with two other players to capture the Mixed Triples.
Luck of the Draw Doubles
In the luck of the draw, Team Christopher Jagmohan and Sudesh Fitzgerald defeated
Anthony Bissondyal and Jaswantie Hiralall 2/1 in the quarter final whom went on and came out victorious against Terrence Joseph and Delon Correia in the semi finals winning 2/0.
The pair Norman Madhoo and Sherwyn Greene defeated Mary Correia and Jamal Holligan in their semi final 2/0 meeting up with Christopher and Sudesh. Unfortunately team Fitzgerald and Jagmohan was crushed by Norman Madhoo and Sherwyn Greene in the finals 3/1.
Mixed Triples
Team Greene, Jagmohan and Mohan were defeated by team Lachman, Seetaram and M. Correia 2/1, they went on and played team Bissoondyal, Ramirez-Merlano and Joseph in the semi finals where they were crushed 2/0.
In the other semi final team Fitzgerald, Hiralall and Holligan defeated Mahdoo, D. Correia and James 2/1. Meeting up in the final Fitzgerald’s team defeated team Bissoondyal, Ramirez-Merlano and Joseph 3/1.
Open Singles
Jaswantie Hiralall defeated Sherwyn Greene 2/1 to set up a clash with Madhoo where she met her demise, Madhoo not only won 2/0, but also finished the game with a 13 darts finish; 140,140,43,138, double 20, this spectacular finish attracted a monetary prize from the GDA which was handed over to him at the presentation.
After defeating Hiralall, he went on to the semi finals where he played against Anil Lachman and won 3/1.
Meanwhile, in the other half of the draw, Fitzgerald after defeating Bissoondyal in the quarter finals 2/0 went on to crush Colin France 3/0 in the other semi final to set up a showdown against nemesis Madhoo for the top prize.
In the final, Fitzgerald won the first leg 10, D5, but Madhoo showing great determination rebounded to win the second leg finishing with 96; 60, 20, D8, leaving Fitzgerald at 218 points. He also scored the maximum points of 180 in this leg. In the third leg it was a fight for the win, both players playing for 40 points Madhoo being the first to check out at D20.
Madhoo won his consecutive 3rd leg checking out again with D20. At 3/1 Fitzgerald now had to win all 3 legs to capture the title. In the 5th leg Madhoo had a chance at D14, but missed giving the leg to Sudesh for D6. The fight for the 6th leg saw Fitzgerald produce a remarkable performance, starting off with the maximum points 180, then 140, followed by 59, 108 and leaving D7.
He missed the double on the first round, but got a second chance at it and hits. At 3 all both players played at their best in the 7th leg, Fitzgerald played 3 consecutive 140 leaving him at 81, Madhoo determined to win played; 140,100, 40 leaving him at 221.
Fitzgerald tried to end the game with a Bull finish, but failed, he played 15, 16 and hit 25. Madhoo came back with a weak 100, leaving himself at 121 points. Fitzgerald at his best terminated Madhoo, playing 9, D8, a 14 darts finish to beat Madhoo 4/3 in the final and in the process register consecutive wins over the former national champion.
