Heavy traffic congestion on Regent Street just before noon on Monday and continuing yesterday saw dozens of drivers stranded in their vehicles for extended periods. The congestion was blamed on the sewerage pump installation at the Camp Street intersection.
According to a number of persons who conduct business in the area, on
Monday the traffic jam began around 10:00 am after one of the lanes (on the northern side of Regent Street) was opened by the construction workers. This lane was closed during the construction period.
According to a Regent Street vendor, Shane Isaacs, during the construction operation, there was congestion, but this only lasted for about 10 minutes.
“Even before this construction work we had traffic build-up, but that was just the morning period when people got to go to work and in the afternoons when they ready to go home. Now soon as a whole set of vehicles pass is sheer confusion,” Isaacs said.
Another vendor, a female, told this publication that aside from the congestion there was also the sound of blaring horns which confused many pedestrians.
“Soon as these men open the lane this (Monday) morning the traffic madness happen and is more we into the day is the worse it getting”, the woman said. She added that for that morning there were two minor accidents on Regent Street which caused a much longer line.
One of the drivers told this publication that he had been in line waiting for about 45 minutes after a vehicle, two cars ahead of him, would not start. He added that it took an additional 10 minutes for a tow truck to get to the immobile vehicle.
“Regent Street does be this busy during Christmastime…otherwise I never see such a traffic build up”, the driver said. He also blamed the “selfishness” of other drivers who did not exercise caution. “They had some people who just didn’t care, people crossing the road and they just hurry… they coulda kill people.”
Meanwhile, when Kaieteur News visited the busy area yesterday, one police rank on motorcycle patrol was seen trying to improve the flow of traffic, but at times was also seen stopping commuters from using the single lane.
