Six of the country’s young amateur boxers will leave Guyana on Friday August 9 to participate in an Invitational youth tournament scheduled to get underway in Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 as the executives of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) continue preparations for the 2016 Brazil Olympiad scheduled for August 2016.
Those making the grade are Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) representatives, Flyweight, Junior Henry and Lightweight, Dwani Lampkin, Bantamweights Travis Hubbard and Shaka Moore of the Harpy Eagles and Essequibo Boxing Gyms, respectively, Travis Fraser of the Tiger Eye Boxing Gym and Quincy Boyce (GDF).
GBA Vice President, Eustace Cuffy, will manage the team while Coach of the Essequibo Boxing Gym, Clifton Moore will be in charge of the boxers training regimen.
President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle, said that he was heartened by the show of goodwill from his counterparts in Trinidad and Tobago. He pointed out that his organisation enjoys good relations with the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Association citing several earlier exchange programmes where boxers from both territories were involved.
Mr. Ninvalle further pointed out that Travis Fraser is one of the boxers that emerged out of the DDL/GBA initiative and has also been shortlisted to travel to Peru for the AIBA Youth Championships later this year.
“This tournament will serve to enhance his skills and prepare him for the impending tournament and consequently, the Brazil tournament,” opined Mr. Ninvalle. The boxers return to Guyana on Monday August 12.
