Local footballers, aspiring to become world class ball weavers, have oft times marveled at the exploits of their world renowned counterparts, the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Zinadine Zidan and Lionel Messi among others, while dreaming of the day when they would have attained such lofty heights. If the real story be told, these locals would realize that amidst their football exploits, those international stars also engage in academics and other wholesome activities to attain a rounded life while enhancing their respective careers.
Fortunately, administrators of the Fruta Conquerors Football Club are cognizant of such prerequisites and in their bid to enhance the lives of their charges, have organized the Fruta Conquerors Football Club Summer Camp 2013 at their clubhouse at the southwestern end of the Tucville ground. The camp is being conducted with the objective of ‘Inspiring Young minds through soccer and academics.’
Activities got underway on July 29 last and will conclude August 16 next. Forty footballers of the Fruta conquerors FC between the ages of 7-17 are involved in the programme and when Kaieteur Sport visited the forum yesterday morning those youths were paying rapt attention as former Bishops High School teacher, Jewel Thomas, facilitated a 90 minute discourse on several topics. She discussed the biography of several international stars while touching on other pertinent areas. Coach of the Fruta Conquerors FC, Sampson Gilbert played an integral role in the general organizing of the event, while Ms Nzinga is the coordinator.
Meanwhile, Secretary of the Fruta conquerors FC, Daniel Thomas, said that executives have planned a well balanced, broad based programme towards the youngsters’ development. Some of the initiatives include educational tours to the National Communication Network (NCN), lectures on the benefits of education, the detriments of drugs and narcotics, techniques on dealing with peer pressure as well as techniques on conflict resolution among other social issues.
The footballers will also be briefed on sports injuries and treatment, nutrition and healthy lifestyles and techniques in anger management among other social issues. Several senior police officers will also deliver lectures on the detriments of narcotics and other anti social vices.
Principal physiotherapist, Ms B. Nelson will grace the forum later in the week to tutor the footballers on issues in her field, while senior Programme Officer of the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association, Ms Paula Sampson will also have discourse with them.
The programme is also geared to facilitate football development and towards this end several affiliates of the football fraternity will support with lectures and demonstrations in their respective areas of expertise. These individuals include national coach, Bill Wilson, Competitions coordinator of the Guyana Football Federation, Lawrence Griffith and Vice President of the GFF, Ivan Persaud. Charmaine Graham will deliver a talk on African History while President of the Fruta Conquerors FC, Wayne Forde will speak to his charges on issues relating to career guidance. The organizers have also planned a social evening where the youth could interact while playing games and enjoying movies.
Several business entities have rendered support towards the success of the programme including Humphrey’s Bakery, Oasis Water and Prudential Industries Inc. Sessions continue from 09:00hrs this morning.
