The first Day/Night game in the tournament produced a seven-wicket victory for the Jamaica Tallawahs against the Antigua Hawksbill as the Limacol CPL T20 cricket tournament continued yesterday at the Guyana National Stadium Providence.
The last day of action in the competition in Guyana attracted another sold-out crowd with most of the fans present for the start of the 15:00hrs game.
Jamaica led by an explosive unbeaten 42 from 23 balls with four fours and three sixes by Andrew Russell, reached 120-3 off 16.5 in reply to Antigua’s 117-7 off their 20 overs.
St Lucia won the toss and opted to bat on a slow track and fast outfield. David Bernard’s first over cost 16 before Vernon Philander Johnson Charles (7) in the next over at 20-1.
The experienced Ricky Ponting (19) and Kieran Powell took the score to 62 before Ponting miss judged the bounce in the 11th over and spooned a pull off Skipper Chris Gayle to mid wicket.
Powell, who batted at number five in the order in his team’s loss to the Barbados Tridents, stroked the ball with confidence on the lush green sward.
But his captain Marlon Samuels (8) soon missed a sweep at Muttiah Muralitharan in the 13th over and was lbw at 74-3. Two balls later the 41-year old Murali got rid of Devon Thomas (2) to finish with 2-18 from his four overs.
Powell, the 23-year-old left-hander from Nevis, was joined by Justin Kemp but with the score on 88 in the 15th over he dragged a delivery from Gayle onto his stumps after looking set on 38 from 35 balls with two sixes and a four.
Kemp and the burly 20-year-old Rakeem Cornwall carried their team to 101 in overcast conditions before Cornwall missed an ill-advised scoop and was lbw for 10 in the 18th over.
Kemp dumped Russell for six in the penultimate over before being taken at extra cover by Gayle for 19 in the final over bowled by Philander who picked up 3-16 and got support from Gayle (2-22).
Gayle opened the batting with Pakistani Ahmad Shahzad as the lights began to take effect and the pair put together 16 before Shahzad (10) hit Kemar Roach to mid-on in the 3rd over.
Nkrumah Bonner swept Anthony Martin for four, caressed Samuels for another boundary through cover before depositing Martin for a six over mid wicket as Gayle played the supporting role in the partnership.
Bonner (21) was bowled by Samuels at 41-2 in the 8th over while Gayle was caught and bowled by a delighted Cornwall for a painstaking 20-ball 11 and Jamaica were 51-3 three overs later.
Russell just managed to evade a quick bouncer from left-arm pacer Sheldon Cotterell but responded by swatting the Jamaican Soldier over extra-cover for four off the next ball.
Russell who clobbered anything loose and ended the contest with a six, added 69 with Danza Hyatt (24*) to see the team from Reggie country to their first win in the competition.
