Dear Editor,
History is always so interesting, the piece on ‘Tracing the History of St. Andrew’s Kirk’ no exception. But I think historical subjects ought to be as factual as possible, giving a warts and all account. Only then would we be able to see things in perspective.
In the early 1960s, a 60 year-old man told me that, as a boy, he saw black people jumping through this church’s windows to gain admission before the service started, because they were not allowed through the doors. They had to sit at the back. Many of them were shabbily dressed. It is probably not the sort of historical fact that one would wish publicised, but nevertheless it is gratifying to know that roughly a century later a woman – probably a descendant of one of those ‘jumpers’ – is now ‘’Moderator of the Kirk’’.
Now, we often discuss at home why B.G. in years gone by had such a high standard of education, and came to the conclusion that our system was based on the Scottish system. Think of the primary school textbooks in the higher classes – many of them by Scottish compilers, the publishing house Scottish – Macmillans. And it has been said that the Scottish system of education has always been higher than the English one. Come to think of it, even the most prominent businesses in Georgetown had Scottish names. The Scots seem to have had a strong presence and influence in B.G.; the English seemed to prefer to remain in the colder climate.
