Robin Persaud (Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club) was a repeat winner of the annual Regan Rodrigues Memorial 50-Mile cycle road race which was held on the West Demerara yesterday.
In this the 9th edition of the event which celebrates the life of the former Guyana Cycling Federation President Regan Rodrigues who died 9-years ago on August 4th, Persaud, who took last year’s race in one Hour 52 Minutes 41.21 Seconds won again this year despite clocking a slower time.
In a hectic sprint home to the line with about 80 meters to go, Persaud out-pedaled Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay (Roraima Biker’s Club), Paul De Nobrega (Team Coco’s) and Orville Hinds (United Bike Shop) in a four way sprint; stopping the clock at One Hour 27 Minutes 55 Seconds. Taking the fifth and sixth positions were John Charles (Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club) and Godfrey Pollydore (Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club).
Hinds took three of the sprint prizes, De Nobrega and Pollydore two each with one going to Mc Kay.
Yesterday’s event, which attracted 52 starters, got off from the Wales Police Station on the West Bank, proceeded to Bushy Park on the East Bank of Essequibo before returning to the Demerara Harbour Bridge for the finish.
The top junior was Hamza Eastman (United Bike Shop), who the day before had won the feature race in the National Park as he continues his continues to show consistent form. The Linden Bauxite Flyers Club duo of National Junior Road Race champion Michael Anthony and Shaquel Agard were second and third in this category.
National Road Race Queen Hazina Barrett (Linden Bauxite Flyers Club) won the ladies category from the Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club pair of Naiomi Singh and Tashanna Doris in One Hour 26 Minutes 52 Seconds.
Julio Melville outsmarted his colleagues in the mountain bike class winning in One Hour 27 Minutes 55 Seconds. Trailing him to the line were Ozia Macullay and Clyde Jacobs in that order.
Talim Shaw (Flying Stars Cycle Club) was the only other repeat winner apart from Persaud having won last year’s veterans category he took it again this year in One Hour 24 Minutes 58 Seconds. Ian ‘Deaf Boy’ Jackson copped second with Shameer Baksh third. Montgomery Parris won the Over-60 category. The ladies, mountain bike and veteran competitors turned back at Uitvlugt on the West Coast.
The top three seniors along with the other category winners were all presented with Ricks and Sari hampers compliments of the Ricks & Sari Agro Industries Limited and the Rodrigues Family whose family members and Ms. Dianne Rodrigues assisted with the presentation of prizes. (Franklin Wilson)
