GCC, Tigers, Marian Academy, Saints advance in U-13

Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC), Futuristik Tigers of Trinidad and Tobago and Combermere C and B of Barbados turned in outstanding performances to book their places in the semifinals of the U-16 category of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company Caribbean Junior Hockey Festival 2013 which is being played at the National Gymnasium.
GCC and Tigers were tied in first place with nine points, but the Tigers
edged the local side by virtue of a better goal difference (8) to head group A. Combermere C top group B with 10 points ahead of Combermere B who finished second with 9 points.
The result means Tigers will clash with Combermere B in one of the semifinals and GCC will face Combermere C in the other.
Combermere placed third while Guyana’s Old Fort Jets and Hikers came fourth and fifth respectively in Group A, while local sides Saints and Old Fort took third and fourth places in that order while Trinidad and Tobago’s Futuristic Bears finished in fifth position in group B.
The Tigers suffered one loss in the group stage when the Guyana’s Old Fort Jets beat them 2-1, but hammered their other rivals to ensure their berth in the final four.
They defeated Combermere 3-0, GCC 5-1 and Hikers 2-1. GCC after losing heavily to the Tigers showed improvement in their next games beating Combermere A 1-0, Old Forte Jets 3-1 and Hikers 2-1.
Combermere C got the better of their fellow Bajans Combermere B 2-1 before crushing Futuristik Bears of the Twin Island Republic 4-0. They were held to a 2-2 draw by Old Fort Shooters but then crushed Saints 5-3 in their final group game. Combermere B outplayed Futuristik Bears 6-0, Old Fort 2-1 and Saints 2-0.
Meanwhile, Futuristik grabbed the first place in the girl’s U-16 category with 15 points and will play Hikers, who ended in fourth position on 7 points in one of the semis. Combermere and GCC will clash in the second semifinal; both teams were tied in second with 9 points but GCC got the nod due to a better goal difference.
In the U-13 division which was played on Friday Marian Academy top group A and GCC took the runner spot after beating Combermere on a penalty shoot out. Futuristik took first place in Group B, while Saints came second. Marina will battle Saints in an all local semifinal, while GCC will take on Futuristik in the next.
Some of the results from Friday U-13 matches are; Combermere beat Hikers 1-0, Futuristik defeated Hikers 4-0, Marion overcame Combermere 1-0, Futuristik beat Saints 3-2, Marion beat GCC 1-0, Saints beat Old Fort 1-0, GCC beat Hikers A 1-0, Old Fort beat Hikers B 4-0.
In the U-16 girls; Combermere beat Old Fort Inkers 5-0, GCC beat Hikers 4-2, GCC beat Old Fort Heats 5-1, Combermere beat GCC 5-1, Futuristik hammered Old Forte Heats 12-0, GCC beat Old Forte Jets 3-1 Hikers and Old Forte Inkers 2-2, Futuristik beat Old Forte Inkers 11-1.
