As Emancipation activities for 2013 continue, eight very beautiful, intellectual, and talented young Afro-Guyanese women will be more than just contesting a pageant; the local beauties, via this year’s Miss Emancipation Pageant, will be assisting to send to school, at least 12 young ladies of Mali, sub-Sahara Africa, where education for girls is not free.
Those with a chance to be at the forefront this noble cause are Franale Holder, Jennel Lovell, Shanice Bourne, Shevona Jerrick, Sunaika Adolphus, Miracle Hilliman, Joelly Valentine and Makida Blake.
These young ladies are more than just pretty faces on well-proportioned bodies with killer instincts for the catwalks; they are ambitious individuals with purpose. Among them are students of the University of Guyana, an aspiring doctor, an aspiring singer and songwriter, and the list goes on.
The pageant seeks to promote Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). It is to this end, through the Guyanese Girls Unite Project, that 12 girls from Mali will be sent to school, since this predominantly Muslim community is being recognized and honoured in this year’s Emancipation observances.
This initiative is expected to equip the Mali girls with much-needed facilities to explore their senses and exploit their skills.
The actual pageant will be hosted at the National Cultural Centre next Sunday, August 11, from 20:00hrs. It will include three segments – evening wear, business wear, and a talent piece.
The eight charismatic young women will have to work hard to ensure that their pieces are perfected. Their onstage presence, their smiles, and the general way in which they portray elegance and grace, will all be scoring points for them as they try to convince the judges that they deserve the much coveted title of Miss Emancipation 2013.
In addition to this prestigious title, the winners will also receive monetary prizes. The queen will be awarded $100,000 while the first runner-up will receive $75,000, followed by the second runner-up with $50,000 and the fourth with $25,000 along with other hampers and prizes.
The delegates are currently working enthusiastically to raise funds for these ventures.
Meanwhile, in keeping with the United Nations Day of the Woman, the delegates will be choosing a strong woman of African Descent to speak on as their respective platforms.
Currently, the reigning Queen is Miss Jillica Pinder who used her portfolio to launch the ‘Guyanese Girls Unite Project’, which aims to promote empowerment of young girls. Over the past year, she has been actively promoting ‘STEM’ in schools across the country.
Organizers of the African Pageant are Dr. Melissa Varswyck, Alexis Connelly, and Public Relations Officer, Shabakie Fernandes.
Tickets for the pageant cost $1000, $1500 and $2000 and are available at the National Cultural Centre; Nigel’s Supermarket, Robb Street; Jones Beauty Salon, D’Urban Street; Ashmin’s Trading, High Street and Upscale Restaurant and Sport Bar, Hinck Street, Georgetown.
