Showing that they are not only interested in the achievements on the field but also in the class room, the Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Memorial Foundation on Wednesday last handed over $100,000 as cash incentives to Watooka Day Primary School’s Zoe Sills and Tamicka Rutherford, top joint top performers at this year’s National Grade Six Assessment Examination, to assist them as they move to start the off their secondary school education at two of the
nation’s top schools.
Making the presentation was Robert ‘Drygo’ Taylor, a former Linden resident, who is United States-based and a member of the US based Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond, which is named after one of the best football players ever from Mackenzie/Linden and was the first to don national colours at the senior national level representing Guyana in the late 1960s.
Taylor told the gathering at the Linden Enterprise Network (LEN) building that they were interested in the development also of the young academically, and this is why they are showing recognition to the top performers from Region 10 (Upper Demerara/Upper Berbice) who incidentally were joint winners, Ms Zoe Sills and Ms. Jamicka Rutherford.
This money was received by the father of Zoe Sills, Pastor Selwyn Sills, as Zoe was not available, and he thanked the organization for their intervention and wished them well, while Tamicka Rutherford was there along with her mother Jamella Bailey; and Tamicka also thanked the organisation for the gesture.
James Craig, the Linden Chapter Coordinator for the Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Foundation informed the gathering that much more will be done from the United States-based Foundation as they intend to have competitions played at the Under 13 and Under-15 levels in the near future among the schools in the Mining Town and not just the annual Under-18 championship, which is in its fifth year.
