-in Linden Secondary School Basketball final
Christianburg/Wismar Multilateral Secondary School also known as ‘Multi’ will look to add yet another victory, this time against arch-rivals Wisburg Secondary, when the two teams clash in the final of the 9th Linden Secondary Schools Under-19 Basketball Championship this afternoon at 4pm at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court.
The game will be preceded by the third place playoff clash, which features last year’s winners, Linden Technical Institute (LTI) against Linden Foundation Secondary (LFS) from 2pm at the same venue.
The tournament has been plagued with a number of postponements for varying reasons, but today, it is hoped, that the much-anticipated final will be held.
The Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) has set this final today with the hope that it gets the support necessary for the staging of such a final and with the ‘Multi’ side brimming with confidence it will take some real solid performances from Wisburg to upset them.
Playing unbeaten in the tournament, the Christianburg/Wismar Secondary team only recently missed out at the National Schools Basketball Festival after they were forced to play without some key players and lost at the semifinals stage.
However, Travin Dryden walked away with the top awards including Most Points, Most Assists and Best Rebounder Awards, which was testimony of his all round game. He has 92 points in the tournament with teammate, guard, Terron Welch, who has a tournament high 137 points.
This Wisburg team has created history by not only reaching the Final Four, but also the final and must credit themselves with excellent teamwork.
Their best players are the shooting guard, Tahquille Johnson who has 83 points in the tournament and Aubrey Campbell, who has ten less with 73 points.
This year, sponsorship has come from both local and overseas. Instrumental in getting the overseas sponsors was former National Women’s Head Coach, Linden ‘Sancho’ Alphonso, who sponsored the 2013 Championship T-Shirts.
Among those who have come on board are EURON Equipment Repairs that donated the first place trophy and replicas, Marlon Josiah, who took care of purchasing the second place trophy and replicas, Orin Louison, who purchased the third place trophy and replicas and Lennox Allicock the fourth place trophy and medals and the Haynes Foundation out of new Jersey.
Maxie Stephens donated eleven of the twelve individual prizes including the Most Valuable Player of the final, Best Rebounder, Best Offensive Player and Most Disciplined team among others. Alphonso also donated a Most Valuable Player Trophy that will for the final along with the Championship T-Shirts.
The local sponsors are Banks DIH Limited and Two Brothers Gas Station of West Demerara.
In addition, this afternoon after the final, the Championship T-Shirts, the winners’ trophy, replicas and other individual wards and team trophies for the runner-up and third and fourth placed teams will be presented.
