Eastman/Austin fight should be a scorcher
By Michael Benjamin
Following an invigorating and spine tingling match between the Amazon Warriors and Jamaica Tallawahs last evening, all attention will now be riveted on fistic action when the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport, the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) and the National Communications Network (NCN) stages the 29th edition of Guyana Fight Night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), this evening.
Green (L) appears more compact than Atwell but the latter fighter would be out to prove that ‘little axes do cut down big trees.’
Clive ‘The Punisher’ Atwell was supposed to have clashed with Barbadian pugilist, Shurwyne ‘The Mauler’ Marshal in an 8 rounds lightweight contest but this fight had to be cancelled after the Barbadian, apparently petrified by Atwell’s reputation, pulled out at the last minute without the courtesy of an explanation. The organizers could only assume that ‘The Mauler’ having heard of the ‘Punisher’ chose not to take chances.
This much was revealed to the media when the organizers hosted the pre-fight press conference in the studios of the NCN yesterday afternoon. Atwell will now be matched against Anson Green in an 8 rounds lightweight affair. Romeo Norville was initially scheduled to match gloves with Green but will now take on Derick Richmond in a 4 rounds super/middleweight bout, while the Eversley Brown/Laured Stewart 4 rounds jnr/middleweight affair remains intact.
The main supporting out between Howard ‘The Battersea Bomber’ Eastman and Mark ‘The People’s Choice’ Austin promises to be a humdinger and will naturally assume the role of the feature attraction.
Austin will bank on the fact that his sobriquet will place him in a more solid position to enjoy wider support than his opponent, while ‘The Battersea Bomber’ might be hardly concerned since he has already proven himself after engaging some of the best world beaters in ‘rough and tumble’ affairs. He has sprung many surprises on the best among the locals including ‘Dangerous’ Denny Dalton and former World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion, Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis. He also fought Simeon ‘Candyman’ Hardy who could consider himself lucky after he was declared the winner in a fight the majority of the spectators believed he had lost.
Eastman, who trains in Berbice, was unavoidably absent from yesterday’s press conference but had stated his intentions at a similar forum staged earlier. He promised to employ all of his wits and experience on his way to humiliating ‘the young kid.’ Austin refused to be browbeaten and while admitting that he respects the international exploits of his nemesis, was adamant that he (Austin) will take home the spoils. Both pugilists remain confident of clinching the victory and view each other from different perspectives. Austin remains adamant that Eastman is a stepping stone; Eastman is out to prove that he is a stumbling block. Fans will make the distinction tonight.
While Green has spouted confidence, it will take much more to punch his way past Atwell. The latter fighter has been on a roll and has stamped his authority after disposing of Rudolph Fraser, Revlon Lake and Prince Lee Isadore in devastating fashion while clinching lucrative Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) and local titles.
GBBC officials revealed Atwell is currently preparing for grueling fights in the WBC 50th Anniversary tournament scheduled for later this year. He has recently attained a number 18 spot in the ratings and is riding high. Green is aware of all this yet he has promised to come out punching tonight and when the smoke is cleared he said that he will have his hands raised. He reiterated this view at the press conference yesterday while assuring his fans that he has been in training all the time. Atwell said that he was a mite disappointed that Marshal is unable to keep his ring date since an international opponent would have added some spice to the card and embellish his record. “But these things happen and I have already reset my mind to the new opponent,” he assures.
There will also be four amateur bouts and Tournament organizer of the GBA, Terrence Poole, said that the boxers were carefully chosen and equally matched to provide rich fistic entertainment. He said that Tefon Green of the Harpy Eagle’s Boxing Gym (HEBG) will be squaring off with Junior Henry in the 110-114lbs division. The last time these two met, Henry had been declared the winner but the pundits were divided on the authenticity of the decision. For this reason, GBA administrators have arranged the return clash which is expected to be a thriller.
In other amateur bouts, junior/flyweights Tyron Lashley of the Rose Hall Jammers will come up against Michael April of the Tiger Eye Boxing gym (TEBG) while welterweights Linden Daniels (GDF) and Travis Fraser (TEBG) will throw down the gauntlet. There will also be a heavyweight clash between Kelroy Evelyn (GDF) and Jason Barker of the Republican Boxing Gym. Tickets for a ringside seat are $1500 each while stands are $1000. Bell time is 20:00hrs.
