Wayne Cave proved that his rise to the podium in the last Open Scrabble tournament was no fluke and he not merely replicated, but bettered the feat when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) staged a two tiered open tournament in the pavilion of the Malteenoes Sports Club yesterday afternoon. Moen Gafoor retained a rich vein of form to capture the honours in the senior category of the tournament.
Ruby Cummings may have been one of Cave’s victims but she graciously returned to present him with his winnings.
Cave chalked up an impeccable 6 points and a positive spread of 612 while Maurice Munru mustered 4 points and a positive spread of 141 to finish second. Kevin Williams also proved that perseverance pays dividends when he rebounded from a thrashing in the last tournament to secure the final podium spot in the junior-tiered segment of yesterday’s tournament.
Cave started his trek to the top with a victory over Williams (36) and before the pre-lunch session was over, he had defeated Ovid Williams (76) and Maurice Munru (107). He returned in the post lunch period to dispose of his nemesis, Robert Williams (185) before sweeping aside Ruby Cummings (136) and Grace Hercules (62).
Four of the seniors competed in a round-robin format and Gafoor’s staunchest opposition came from former National and Caribbean Champion, Fred Collins who won their first match-up (260) but conceded the second by a close spread of 12.
Otherwise, Gafoor dominated this category with wins over Deonarine (62 & 187) and Belony (17 & 10) to reign supreme. Belony finished second with 4 points and a positive spread of 454 while Collins accrued 3 points and a positive spread of 238 to seal off the top spots.
Meanwhile, President of the GASP, Leon Belony congratulated Cave and Williams for their sterling performances. He said that not so long ago Cave was battling to be among the top ten junior players but is now consistently occupying a lucrative spot among the top seeds.
The GASP President also congratulated Williams and urged him to continue attending practice sessions so as to build on his achievement.
The players convene next week Thursday, and every Thursday evening thereafter for practice sessions at the tournament venue. The date for the next tournament will be announced soon.
