A taxi driver was released on $750,000 bail after he appeared in court for allegedly swindling $2.4 million from a young business couple who had been trying to own their own home in Georgetown.
Yesterday, Cecil Davis, 30, of 1542 Diamond Housing Scheme, was brought before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ court where the charge was read to him.
It is alleged that between May 18 and July 19, by false pretence, he obtained $2.4 million from Raymond James and Candace Sealy with intent to defraud.
The defendant was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
According to Prosecutor Ramsahoye Rambajue, the complainants are owners of a dredge in Mahdia. During the period mentioned in the charge, they hired Davis to take them around the city and its environs to conduct their business.
During the journey the taxi driver overheard them discussing their need to purchase a house in Georgetown. The defendant then told the couple that he knows a reliable contact in the Ministry of Housing that could get them the house they are looking for at a reasonable price. Davis took them to a woman by the name of “Angela” who managed to convince the couple that she was an employee of the Ministry of Housing. “Angela” then took the couple to view two house lots on the East Bank of Demerara.
The complainants were excited at the “sweet deal” they were getting. “Angela” told them that in order to get the house they would have to pay the full amount and it could be theirs in a matter of days. They then paid the woman the money mentioned in the charge and haven’t seen her since.
They reported the matter to the police and the driver was picked up, since he was the person who initially arranged the deal.
Prosecutor Rambajue objected to bail, explaining to the court that investigations are still ongoing and there are similar allegations against the defendant that are also being investigated, hence other charges are likely to follow.
Attorney at Law Patrick Harris, who represented Davis, requested reasonable bail for his client since the offence is a bailable one. The lawyer added that the mastermind, who has not been arrested, seems to be “Angela” as it was she who collected the money and not his client.
The Prosecutor indicated to the court that further advice from the DPP will have to be sought.
The lawyer requested for his client to report to the station and lodge his passport as a condition attached to bail being granted.
Davis was subsequently granted his pre-trial liberty and will return to court on August 12.
