– crowd support at final was huge – Jacqueline James
By Franklin Wilson
The final of the 3rd edition of the Digicel Schools Football Championship (DSFC) is still the talking point of football buffs not only in the city but every corner of Guyana.
Those who would have read about the game in the Diaspora have also been weighing in on another successful year but more importantly, the quality of play exhibited in the championship game between the two best teams; champions, Wismar/Christianburg Secondary and Waramadong Secondary.
This photo shows part of the massive crowd at the final of the 3rd Digicel School’ Football Championship at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.
Main sponsor and the entity behind this still emerging vision, Digicel, is most understandably delighted with the continued upward climb of the tournament as well as the wonderful support given by members of the public.
Head of Marketing at Digicel, Jacqueline James spoke with Kaieteur News about the feelings of the company in relation to another successful tournament.
Digicel, ever since its coming to the Caribbean has set a high standard and displayed admirable vision in promoting and developing the most important resource, which is the human resource. One would not have to cast their mind far back to the Digicel Kick Start Clinic (DKSC) which has seen hundreds of youths throughout the Caribbean given the opportunity to showcase their talent to the world; England football Legend, John Barnes, the main resource person.
Like the DKSC, the DSFC has been doing likewise, affording our youths the opportunity to exhibit their skills and what a success it has been. The most ardent of football fans would not have envisaged the quality of play they would have been treated to were it not for this tournament which Digicel has committed to in the coming years.
James herself a football fanatic, did not hesitate to state her delight in seeing so many families and friends packing into the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary on Sunday last to support their team (s).
“It was a delight to see that so many families and friends coming out to support our youths in the finals of the Digicel’s Schools’ Football Championship. We had people from across the length and breadth of Guyana, who came out in their numbers, which enhanced the excitement of the games played.”
The weather was good on Sunday afternoon last and the players rose to the occasion as they sought to excite their own family members, friends and supporters. It didn’t matter who you were rooting for, good football was the order of the day.
As James puts it, it was all about Digicel supporting the development of youths in Guyana.
“We do look forward to next years’ Championship which I am sure will be much bigger than this year’s tournament. The support we received from our sponsor Powerade (Banks DIH) was overwhelming and very much appreciated. It was also a surprise to see so many from “corporate Guyana” supporting the Championship throughout the season and who were also present at the finals.”
Without a doubt, the Digicel Schools’ Football Championship is the biggest football competition this country has ever seen and it destined to get even bigger and better.
James acknowledged the support of all and sundry pointing out that even though it is the brainchild of her company and CEO Gregory Dean, it could not have been a success without the support of all.
“We are truly excited about its success, and we look forward to another fantastic year next year. A heartfelt thank you to all the teams who participated, and congratulations to the two schools who made it to the finals. Waramadong who played a very, very good game, and to the winners Wismar Christianburg Secondary who defended and retained the Championship title.
I would like to let all know that the Digicel’s Schools’ Football championship gives our youths the opportunity to UNITE as a team and work along with each other, DEVELOP their skills as individuals and as a team and EXCEL in the sport that they love.”
Fans that attended the event on Sunday last did not leave empty handed as they were given tokens, compliments of DIGICEL.
