Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company (GT&T) commendably fulfilled its corporate obligations after confirming sponsorship to the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) as part of the Body’s preparations for the upcoming 8th Caribbean Pre-Cadet Championships which is scheduled to be staged in Guyana from August 10-15, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Yesterday, during a simple presentation ceremony in the Company’s Canteen Public Relations Officer Nadia DeAbreu in the presence of fellow PRO Allison Parker handed over a cheque for an undisclosed sum to President of the GTTA Godfrey Munroe in the presence of other officials, parents and selected players.
GT&T PRO Nadia DeAbreu hands over the sponsorship cheque to President of the GTTA Godfrey Munroe in the presence of fellow PRO Allison Parker (centre) and National Coach Linden Johnson and members of the squad yesterday.
DeAbreu speaking at the occasion spoke of the interaction with the GTTA which according to her commenced last year, adding that the sponsorship is primarily for the regional tournament, but also has accommodation for other organised programmes as well.
She reminded also the other cost that the Company will accrue for branding and other related assistance for being a part of the championships.
Munroe in his remarks first thanked the Company on behalf of the Executive Committee of the GTTA for its support and recognition for the development of sports and sporting organisations.
“Sponsorship is a very significant component for the development of sports and it also affords the respective organisations and associations the opportunity to do more for the athletes as well,” Munroe said.
He lauded GT&T for being the first Company to come on board, informing that it is because of their assistance in addition to other corporate entities that has enabled them to host an event of such magnitude, stating that without such munificence it would be difficult or even impossible to engage in such an undertaking.
The event according to Munroe acts as an incubator for the GTTA to be able to produce more stars and by extension the Caribbean.
Munroe added that the hosting of such an event is extremely significant since it allows them to lobby the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) for more grants, especially for training purposes etc.
“It allows us to showcase many of our junior players and this programme is all part of the ITTF Global Development Initiative,” Munroe related.
The GTTA Head disclosed that apart from host Guyana, six foreign countries have already confirmed participation and they include Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica, Aruba and Suriname, while President of the Caribbean Regional Table Tennis Federation Juan Villa is also expected to be part of the proceedings.
The categories to be contested at the Caribbean Pre-Cadet tournament include Boys singles, doubles and Mixed doubles, Girls singles, doubles and Mixed doubles in the respective age groups and two sessions will be held daily from 09:00 hrs-12:00 hrs and 16:30 hrs-20:00 hrs.
