The punches slammed into the strike pads and the force ricocheted around the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) Boxing Gym; Laured Stewart was hard at work in preparation for his 4 rounds Jnr./Middleweight clash against veteran pugilist, Eversley Brown when the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) stages the 29th Edition of Guyana Fight Night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) this Friday, August 2 next.
Though Steward is a seasoned amateur boxer, he is a young professional who has only stripped off his shirt approximately two months ago to take a lopsided unanimous decision against a more seasoned Anson Green. He said he has special plans for Brown and has adopted the fitting sobriquet ‘The Nightmare’ because that is exactly what he will be to his nemesis.
Stewart has resumed training one week after he had taken care of Green and the benefits of such discipline are apparent in his well toned physique. Yesterday afternoon he was taken through his paces by his coach, Sebert Blake with support from Joseph Murray. Already, he has sparred more than 30 rounds and though he took a rest from sparring yesterday afternoon, it was evident that he is ready for Friday night’s shindig.
“I’d just like to inform Eversley that the sobriquet is appropriate because I’m scary and dangerous,” spouted Stewart during his one minute reprieve from the striking pads. Blake was in agreement. He said that his charge has had rigid sessions and is ready to resume his winning ways. Blake said that Stewart has sparred intensively with Troy Lewis, Dexter Gonsalves and Dexter Marques and stood his ground against them all. Blake further said that he was forced to reduce the amount of round that hi charged sparred because Stewart has peaked early and he (Blake) is careful not to extend him beyond his limit. Blake is fully confident that his charge will win this bout and boasted that he would be going for an abbreviated win.
Troy Lewis also shared similar views as Blake. He said that Stewart has impressed him during sparring sessions with his power punches and speed. “I will be surprised if Brown rallies to the end of the fight,” exhorted Lewis. Meanwhile, Brown is working out at the Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym and Kaieteur Sport will monitor his activities for a subsequent report. Several other exciting fights will be staged including the feature attraction between multiple champion, Clive Atwell and Barbadian, Shurwyne ‘The Mauler’ Marshal, in an 8 rounds lightweight contest.
Former European Middleweight Champion, Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman, will tackle Mark Austin in an 8 rounds non title affair while Jnr./Lightweight pugilist, Anson Green opposes Berbician, Richard Williamson over 4 rounds. Four amateur bouts will also add to the excitement and the names of those boxers will be released sometime today. The cost of a ringside seat is $1500 while stands are $1000.
