Easing the concerns of service station owners and motorists alike, regarding the gas shortage, was news of a fuel laden vessel arriving in Port Georgetown, tomorrow from a fuel supplier in Curacao.
According to reports, due to a disruption in Curacao, the fuel could not be delivered to the various destinations on time; resulting in the Guyana available stock running low.
The shortfall of gasoline, in turn, resulted in several service stations to close their doors. And this was not confined to any single supplier. Sol, the largest in the country was affected.
Its General Manager Orlando Boxhill said that his company had to close many stations hours before regular closing time.
Like Sol, Rubis and Guyoil obtain supplies from Curacao.
While it appeared that some service stations had sought other means by which to top up their supply so as to keep operating; others indicated that until the vessel arrives, their pumps will remain dormant.
Up to press time yesterday, large Sol trucks were seen dispensing fuel to some stations, namely Shell’s Regent Street and Agricola, East Bank Demerara locations. The company was using its reserves.
Guyoil’s Hadfield Street location reported that its fuel supply had been exhausted at midday yesterday.
Service stations are expected to adopt regular service following the arrival of the fuel from Curacao. And Sol said that it would adopt measures to ensure that this shortage never happens again.
