Volleyball action is set to return to the Ancient County when the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) stages the Annual Rick Sakawat one day Inter-club Competition on Sunday August 4th at the Guysuco Port Mourant Training Centre Courts, Corentyne, Berbice.
The competition is being sponsored by overseas based Guyanese Devo Girdhari, who is a former colleague of the late Rick Sakawat, and is being used to keep the name and memory of the former player who played for Port Mourant Volleyball club alive.
The competition is expected to attract both male and female teams. Among the teams slated to participate are –PMTC 1&2, Port Mourant Jaguars, Three Doors Strikers 1&2, Albion Sports Complex, Union-Renaissance Sports Club, Falcons of Canje and Vikings of Blairmont.
The female category is expected to see participation from Sunshine Girls and a Berbice U-19 females selection.
Trophies and other incentives will be presented to the first three finishers in the male category while both female teams will receive incentives. Prizes will also be presented to the outstanding individual players including the MVP, best setter, best spiker, best defence, best blocker, best server and best libero in both categories.
According to Girdhari, teams will be outfitted in different coloured Rick Sakawat T-Shirts. The competition will be played on a “round-robin” basis and the action is scheduled to commence at 9:30 hrs. Teams are urged to be punctual for the opening ceremony since latecomers will be penalized.
PMTC 1 is the defending champions, having won the last competition played in 2011. Last year the competition was not played due to unforeseen circumstances.
