Thousands turned out to watch the energetic and dynamic Soca superstar Machel Montano at the Guyana National Stadium Saturday night.
With almost four hours of live performances, patrons were sweat-drenched when they finally left the event organised by Pulse Entertainment.
Machel and the High Definition Band that includes Farmer Nappy and Patrice Roberts gave patrons the adrenaline to party hard as Shal Marshall, Olatunji Yearwood and Trinidadian Chutney Queen, Drupatie Ramgoonai also shared the stage with Montano.
Soca superstar Machel Montano has enjoyed a nearly three-decade long career in music, taking the music from his Caribbean home of Trinidad and Tobago, and spreading it around the globe to much acclaim and commercial success, including several sold out shows at Madison Square Garden in recent years. The star noted Saturday evening that the crowd that welcomed him at the National Stadium was one of the largest he had seen.
The event began minutes before midnight with Chutney Queen, Drupattie, who belted out the tune “Mr Bissessar (Roll up de Tassa.)” The singer from Penal, Ramgoonai recorded her first crossover tune in 1987, entitled “Chutney Soca”, and placed second a year later in the national Carnival Road March title. She continued the night with her crossover tune “Wuk up de Larkhi” which garnered much hype from the crowd, along with other selections.
After his waves of a successful Carnival season 2013, Olatunji Yearwood was next with his gyrating selections including “Wha Do” and “Bam Bam” and “Gal telling” amongst other selections. He even challenged one of the many beautiful ladies in the crowd to go on stage and show how their hips can gyrate; however, no one took up the challenge. Only Machel’s challenge was accepted with him calling a petite young lady who impressed him with her bouncing and flexibility, causing the dance off to end with her bouncing from his waist onto his face, yes, I said face!
Then came Shal Marshall who has over 15 active years experience in the entertainment industry with “She want to ride it,” “Trouble,” “Celebrate Life,” “Wine yuh Body” and “Type ah Wine” along with other selections.
Marshall who is also a Radio Personality, Television Host, Promoter, Master of Ceremonies and now Soca Artist also gave a thrilling performance.
Meanwhile, Patrice Roberts, who came to international attention in 2005 with the hit collaboration “The Islands” alongside Cousin Bunji Garlin, gave a decent performance. Some of her many hits included: “Love of my life”, “The Islands”, “Band of the year”, “Light it up”, “Always Be”, “Sugar Boy”, “Till Tomorrow”, “Culture” and “Wuking Up.”
Delivering his trademark energetic performance at the concert, the man of the moment Montano sealed the deal with hours of performance on stage “Lock off the Place.”
He also had ladies scampering in front of the stage to catch his shirt that he tossed into the crowd. The lucky lady did not cease smelling her way into the fabric.
Some of his hits include “Coming Again,” “Dance With You,” “Different Wine, “Down D Road,” “Carnival,” Gal wuk,” hard wuk,” amongst others.
The Soca star ended the event by fogging up the place with CO2 as he asked the crowd if they want more, which echoed a positive answer. He has promised to return.
