Keion Williams (PRBG) delivered a wicked flurry of punches, merely 9 seconds into the first round in his 115-119lbs duel with Anthony Miguel (YA) and sent his man to the canvas, writhing in pain, and eventually for the full count when the curtains went up on the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA)/Demerara Distillers Ltd (DDL) U-16 boxing tournament at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG) yesterday morning.
The fight was so brief that few actually saw the killer punch but the effects were apparent as Miguel tumbled to the canvas and vainly attempted to assert himself but his legs were rubbery and simply refused to cooperate. Eventually, the ringside nurse attended to him and sent him off to the hospital for a more detailed examination.
There were no other knockouts but several bouts had the small but appreciative crowd on its feet as the Simon Pures really showed off their wares.
The 60-64lbs duel between Jakeel Codogan (HE) and Orwane Harris (FYF) was indeed a thriller as both boxers strove to clinch the verdict. The former pugilist was a busybody even as he attempted to evade his opponent’s stiff jabs and right crosses. Harris would have none of it and kept him at bay with several ramrod shots. The pattern continued up to halfway of the second round when Codogan got into stride and a delightful battle ensued with each pugilists giving as much as he received. In the end it was Harris who proved the more determined after landing several combinations that earned his a points verdict.
The 80-84lbs clash between Roy Samuels (HE) and John Moore (FYF) was another thriller. The two boxers went after each other in a no holds barred encounter that sent the spectators wild. Samuels swung to Moore’s head but the FYF representative took it like a man and responded with several bombs of his own. The two gladiators threw caution to the wind and unleashed vicious salvos that had their fans going wild. The support was evenly divided as the chants went up nearing the end of the bout. Buoyed by the support, both pugilists lashed out and when the bell sounded they were engaged in a nice little flurry in the red corner. It was indeed a pity that one had to lose but Moore was declared the winner.
In the other results: 55-59lbs Kevin Mullin (HE) proved too good for Equancy Wrights (ESSQ) but he returned later in the night to concede a points decision to Moses Oxford (HE). Malrick Walcott (ESSQ) also lost to Jaimi Kellman (YA) in that division while in the 75-79lbs category, Shemar Bumbury (FYF) won on points from Ansol Wolfe (HE). Kevon Mullin (HE) also defeated Delroy Elcock (ESSQ) in the same division while in the 85-89lbs category; Deshon Elcock (ESSQ) defeated Monthel Johnson (CBG).
The 133-140lbs bout between Akiel Mounter (ESSQ) and Andre Waldron was a championship bout and the former boxer prevailed. The boxers return this morning at the same venue from 10:00hrs for the finals.
