The inclement weather was playing cat and mouse with the premiere Trade Fair and Exposition in Berbice. A sizeable crowd was on hand for the opening ceremony on Friday at the Albion Community Centre, Corentyne Berbice.
The activity which is organized by the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce (CCCC) is expected to conclude tomorrow. The event is in its ninth year.
Giving the feature address and declaring the activity open was President Donald Ramotar. The Trade Fair and Expo this year, is being held under the theme “Raising our Standards, Embracing our Competitiveness”.
President Ramotar focused on the ongoing brouhaha over the Amaila Falls Hydro project which he said could be the future for Guyana. He said that he is not too happy with what is happening with the Hydro Project.
He said that Guyana has come a long way from a Heavily Indebted Poor Indebted Country (HIPIC) to becoming a developing county and now looking to become a developed country. The infusion of a Hydro project could be what Guyana needs at the moment, he said.
To propel growth Guyana has to get the right infrastructure in place so that production and productivity could be improved. Ramotar noted that one of the major setbacks is the high cost for electricity, for which a hydroelectric plant will be the answer.
Commenting on some other investments in Berbice the President spoke about the proposed industrial site at Belvedere where $50M will be spent to develop the site.
President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Clinton Urling, congratulated the CCCC for a job well done over the years. He urged the private sector to begin a process of taking command and forging forward with activities that will stimulate more growth.
He stated that the Guyana government and Go-Invest have been doing their bit but the Private sector should step up.
Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Irfaan Ali in his message stated that Government will continue to do what is necessary to help the economy to grow.
Regional Chairman Region Six, David Armogan, welcomed everyone to Berbice and to the event. He said that the activity is very important. It brings the large manufacturers and producers to Berbicians and also provides the opportunity to display production out of Berbice. Another benefit, he said, is that Berbicians have a chance to see and make better and informed decisions when choosing products and services.
He called on local tour operators to create packages at a reasonable cost and give persons the opportunity to view the Ancient County.
More than 100 exhibitors are participating in the expo this year. Among the sponsors are the Ministry of Tourism, GT&T, Banks DIH, Digicel, Edward Beharry and Company, Comfort Sleep, Metro, Demerara Bank, Republic Bank, ENet Works, Guysuco, NCN and the Region Six Regional Administration.
An assortment of Food stalls was evident; the different beverage companies— Banks DIH Limited, DDL, Ansa Mc Al and CIDI, fought to outdo each other with their many giveaways and other impressive displays. Telephone companies GT&T and Digicel were also there with their many give aways and sumptuous bargains.
Coordinator Tajepaul Adjodhea was upbeat that this year’s activity will be the best so far. He said that he is excited to bring off the activity which has now become a household name on the local calendar. He is urging Guyanese to come out and support the event because what they are offering this year will be special.
Security, once again for the opening night was tight with scores of policeman and private security personnel in attendance.
