The 16th Annual Hearts of Oak Masters Football Club ‘Teach them Young’ football summer camp is progressing smoothly according to Coordinator Neil ‘Grizzly’ Humphrey in New Amsterdam.
The camp which is being held at the Scot Church ground, Princess Elizabeth Road and the nearby Prison Officers Sports Club New Amsterdam, began on Monday 15th July and is expected to conclude on Friday 16th August 2013. It is being held five days weekly from Monday-Friday from 09:00hrs -12:00 hrs.
Over 100 youths ranging from four to 20 years are participating in the activity. The youths are being taught the finer points of the game which include both theory and practical.
The practical sessions entails showing the youngsters the various ways in receiving, passing, shooting, taking, dribbling, goalkeeping and throwing the football among other points. The youths are also being schooled in discipline, etiquette, good table manners and general education with physical fitness also being an integral part of the sessions.
According to Humphrey the main aim of the programme is to have the youths better able to appreciate the rules and regulation of the game, improve their knowledge and skills and understand general sportsmanship and have a better human relationship with others and improve their discipline generally.
At the end of the camp the youths will be involved in exchange visits and will be presented with certificates and other memorabilia, while the more outstanding players will be selected to participate in a tour to other parts of the country where they will participate in a number of goodwill games.
Apart from Humphrey, other personnel and coaches that are involved in the sessions are former national players Adrian Forde, Kendrick Bowry, Randy Sears and Nigel Felix among others that are being incorporated to impart their specific knowledge during the programme. (Samuel Whyte)
