Guyana booked their place in both finals of the team events with hard fought victories over Trinidad & Tobago. Guyana played Trinidad first in the Boys semifinals. First on court was Shomari Wiltshire in the Boys Under-13 tie. He was just too good for his opponent Kobie Khan winning easily three games to nil.
Next on court Ben Mekdeci destroyed Jonathan Blanc three games to nil. The match up of Under-19 number one strings saw Jean Claude moved out to an early nine points to four lead in the first game against Caribbean Under-19 runner up Mandela Patrick, but he lost the game and eventually lost the other two easily thus losing three games to love.
The match of the afternoon was the rematch between the two Under-17 finalists Nyron Joseph and Nku Patrick and it went down to the wire. Nyron won the first and Nku won the second. Nyron won the third and at ten four match ball, it seemed all was lost for Nku and Guyana was in the final but Nku dug deep and clawed his way back to take the fourth and then the fifth. It then came down to the decider between Steven Xavier and Chad Salandy. Steven held his nerve and was a comfortable winner by three games to nil.
In the girls match first on court was Madeda Harding against Amiee De Verteuil in the Girls Under-13 tie. Makeda played a controlled game and was an easy winner three games to nil. The Girls Under-15’s were on court next and Rebecca Low played a fantastic match against Marie Claire Barcant. Rebecca went up two games to nil and at ten nine match ball in her favour in the third it seemed as if Guyana’s place in the finals was more certain, but it was not to be as Marie Claire managed to win the third and the won the fourth and fifth games fairly comfortably.
The Girls Under-19 number one strings were next on the court and this again featured the two finalists in the division, Victoria Arjoon and Charlotte Knaggs. Victoria again played quite well in the first game but Charlotte was much too quick to the ball and won the match three games to nil. In the girls Under-17 tie Akeila Wiltshire played Faith Marion Gillezeau and was a comfortable winner by three game to nil.
Again like in the Boys tie it had come down to the Under-19 number two tie to determine which team would move forward to play in the final. Gabby Fraser, who had finished third in the Girls under-17 division, was pitted against Talia Abdool who had finished fourth in the Girls Under-19 division. Gabby won the first game quite easily but Talia came out more focused in the second, but once Gabby was able to win the second game eleven points to eight, it seemed to take all the fighting spirit out of Talia and Gabby won the third to win the match by three games to nil.
Guyana will play Jamaica at 12:00 noon in the Girls final and at 1:00 pm in the Boys final.
