Residents of Sussex Street, Albouystown, and surrounding areas are peeved that the buildup of garbage has compromised the drainage system.
The “garbage infested canal” has contributed to the flooding of the area and has caused major discomfort to the populace.
“These things can cause serious health issues for residents in the area,” one man noted.
Residents explained that callous littering and wanton dumping of garbage into the drains and on the parapets has caused major blockage to the free flow of water in a number of drains.
The drain at the junction of Hunter and Sussex Streets are clogged with garbage, causing unnecessary flooding in the area.
City Council officials noted that residents of Albouystown have been urged repeatedly to desist from littering in the area since the municipality cannot take on all the burden.
However, flooding remains in some communities in the city because of indiscipline on the part of residents, since Georgetown is below sea level and thus is prone to such watery dilemmas.
