A convicted criminal and known offender was on Friday sentenced to four years imprisonment after he confessed to stealing a Titan Truck valued at $3.5 million.
Wayne Baker, who was already serving seven years in jail for similar crimes, told Providence Magistrate, Leron Daly, that he is guilty of stealing the motor vehicle from Ramchand Netram on April 24, last.
Netram had parked his motor vehicle, GMM 2766 at the site of scrap metal operation at Friendship on the East Bank Demerara. He left his vehicle secured by means of an alarm system and left the keys in the ignition. Baker, who was recently released from prison at the time, after serving a six-month sentence for breaking and entering, used the opportunity to steal the Titan.
The convict had initially pleaded not guilty to the allegation claiming that he was employed by the owner of the vehicle. Baker claimed that he had borrowed the plaintiff’s vehicle since the man had owed him money.
However at Friday’s hearing, Baker indicated that he wished to change his plea.
The Magistrate obliged and subsequently sentenced Baker.
