All of the previous suspects held in relation to the fire that destroyed the six-bedroom guest house at Charity have been released and police investigating the incident are still gathering statements that they hope will lead to apprehending and charging the main suspect.
Three persons were initially held in relation to the fire. Officers attached to the Guyana Fire Service, who investigated the fire, have determined the fire to be the work of arsonist/s. The last suspect to be released was hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital, nursing severe burns to his face and hands.
Police were told that the man who is called “Chungie”, used gasoline to set the guest house alight with a lighter.
Burley Burnett, the owner of the Guest House said that she is convinced that Chungie was behind setting her business place alight. He said that he didn’t act alone, that he was coerced into carrying out the act.
Burnett said that the evidence is glaring.
She acquired the building some three years ago for her son, Forbes Sampson Melville aka “Forbes”. The building was insured.
Repair works to the building have not been started as yet.
