-Third place playoff is a battle for pride
By Rawle Welch
Despite the lop-sided scoreline in last year’s final between eventual champions Wismar/ Christianburg and Waramadong, fans went away satisfied that the two combatants had treated them to a scorching exhibition of football.
The two teams are once again set to do battle in a repeat of last year’s final and judging from the their impressive showings so far in the competition, another rivetting contest is anticipated today, at the Police Sports Club ground as the 2013 Digicel Nationwide Schools Football Championship comes to a climax.
The defending champions Wismar / Christianburg has looked everything like champions since the tournament commenced last month, putting away opponent after opponent with consumate ease, while Waramadong, who started the competition with convincing wins over Three Miles and Bartica managed to maintain their quality until the semi-final where they were made to fight against Covent Garden, before coming away with a penalty kicks triumph.
However, they are known to be a very efficient side with a lot of trickery and ball handling skills and are also very efficient in the passing game so despite a few lapses here and there it would be silly to right them off as undeserving opponents.
On the other hand, Wismar / Christianburg have performed as worthy champions and should start the game as firm favourites to retain their crown, especially judging from their imposing display against Georgetown champions St. George’s in their semi-final clash which they won 6-1.
Many of the experts have labeled the matchup as good organization versus stylishness and it has all the trappings of pure excitement from the start.
Both teams will not be short of fan support since they are both known to have followers everywhere they play and Digicel has already consented to provide some amount of transportation for the respective band of supporters.
It is clear that one team will be looking to cement their legacy, while solidifying a dynasty when the match commences and in this case it is Wismar / Christianburg, while Waramadong will be aiming for revenge, having lost 5-2 to them last year.
Marmarlique Davidson, who netted a helmet trick in last year’s final and was named top goalscorer, will once again lead his team’s charge for supremacy and his support is expected from the likes of Shane Luckie, the prolific Jashawn Moore, Nigel Caesar and Donavan Francis.
Conversely, Whazir Bascombe, who started a bit slowly, but has gradually found form and who scored in last year’s final will spearhead their quest with assistance anticipated from Kevon Richmond, Fernando Hunter and Kenton Browne, all deadly players on their day.
The third place playoff should also be an interesting affair with St. George’s down to play Covent Garden.
This game is about which team is more determined as they rely on their doggedness rather than panache and technical superiority to generate wins.
Reeling from their semifinal capitulation, St, George’s will look for an improved collective output as they aim to finish the tournament on a relative high note, while Covent Garden should be feeling confident after their semi-final display against Waramadong.
Pride is at stake here and in addition to wanting to treat the fans to an exciting brand of football an open and high scoring contest is predicted.
Kick off time 16:00hrs.
