Agents of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) yesterday intercepted over 10 kilograms of cocaine at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA). The drug was destined for JFK international.
The substance was found in a bag that had already been placed on the trolley. It was found at the back of the terminal building in the baggage area.
Kaieteur News understands that the substance was to be loaded on Caribbean Airlines flight BW 526 destined to the John F Kennedy (JFK) airport. The flight was scheduled to depart at 15:50hrs, some two hours after the find.
This publication understands that Caribbean Airlines (CAL) security first spotted the bag. Agents of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit were informed and they, in turn, requested the involvement of anti narcotics police agents also attached to the airport.
Investigators believe that the bag, which carried a false tag, might have been there since Friday night.
No arrest has been made.
