Punches are expected to fly and residents of the Albouystown community and its environs are in for a treat when the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) in collaboration with the Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) stages the 3rd edition of the Pepsi/Gatorade Under-16 Boxing tournament at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG) today and tomorrow starting at 10:00hrs.
As usual, the young boxers will provide unbridled entertainment when they square off and once again the beverage giants have acquiesced to exclusive sponsorship.
Yesterday morning DDL Brand Executive, Larry Wills, journeyed to the Main Street office of President of GBA, Steve Ninvalle, where a cheque to offset the requisite expenses exchanged hands. Boxing coach and Tournament Director, Terrence Poole was also present at the ceremony.
Mr. Ninvalle expressed gratitude to his benefactor saying that DDL’s involvement has once again provided the impetus for his executives to continue with their programme. He noted that DDL has been a vital part of the developmental plan even as he beseeched continuity of such support. The GBA boss further assured Mr. Wills that his executives are cognizant of the need for optimum safety measures and have put the necessary modalities in place.
Consequently, Mr. Ninvalle reiterated the intention of his executive to expand the sport to the other regions. He said that plans are in train to host boxing cards in Essequibo and Linden in October and December, respectively.
He said that the aim of this initiative is to reignite the passion for the sport in those territories. “Already we have distributed gears to clubs in those regions so a boxing card there will further heighten the interest level,” posited Ninvalle.
Mr. Wills said that his company was delighted to once again extend support to the GBA. He said that this was due, in large part, to the organizational skill of the GBA and the concomitant benefits accrued by the young pugilists.
He said that the tournament would be conducted under the famous Gatorade and Pepsi brands, both satisfying products. The brand Executive further intimated that Gatorade is the appropriate health drink because it replenishes energy and would be advantageous for the boxers during competition. “I wish you all the best and do have a safe and enjoyable tournament,” urged Mr. Wills.
Mr. Poole also extended gratitude to officials of the beverage company. He said that the benefits of their chivalry are apparent in the general improvement of the boxers. Mr. Poole further said that three boxers,
Stephon Green, Joel Williamson and Travis Fraser are all products of the DDL initiative and have earned selection to the South American Games, scheduled for Peru in September.
He said that these three boxers have graduated from the DDL/Pepsi initiative which is ample proof of the benefits derived.
More than 40 boxers from the various worlds associations will participate in the tournament and Wencel Thomas will be the Coach while Eustace Cuffy will be the Manager.
