A 24-year-old man was shot dead and another badly wounded around 18:45 hrs yesterday on Mandela Avenue, West Ruimveldt during a gunfight between the occupants of a minibus and the passengers of a car.
Elvis Fernandes, of Lot 101 West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, was shot in the head while sitting in a car, and succumbed before reaching the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. However, police stated that he was shot in the chest.
The alleged shooter, identified as Lloyd Britton,20, of Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, was shot in the stomach by a police rank who was in the car with Fernandes. He has been admitted to the GPHC.
A police release said that the incident stemmed from a previous grievance between the two parties over a damaged vehicle. Kaieteur News understands that the mirror of one vehicle was broken.
“Initial investigations have revealed that the driver of a minibus and the driver of a car had an argument earlier at Mandela Avenue as a result of a damage accident involving the two motor vehicles,” the release said.
According to the release, the two drivers later crossed paths again along Mandela Avenue as the minibus stopped to put off a passenger, and another argument arose between Fernandes and the minibus driver.
Police said that a passenger in the bus shot Fernandes.
It is alleged that the policeman who was in the car, and who was making efforts to pacify the men then returned fire from his service firearm and wounded the shooter in the bus.
“He has been admitted a patient under guard at the GPHC,” the release said. Elvis Fernandes was pronounced dead on arrival at the GPHC.”
Fernandes’s grief-stricken relatives told Kaieteur News that they had no information as to what had transpired.
However, one relative said that a friend who owned a car picked him up at home around 17:30 hrs and that they later heard that he had been shot.
