– defend GPF Athletics title with gutsy performance
By Edison Jefford
Headquarters was forced to dig deep yesterday after an initial thumping from ‘A’ Division to get back in the lead and move on to eventually retaining its Guyana Police Force (GPF) Track and Field Championships overall title at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.
The defending champions, Headquarters, who trailed ‘A’ Division after the first two days of the competition on Tuesday and Wednesday, overhauled a 21-point lead heading into the final day to win with 509 points opposed to ‘A’ Division’s 471 points. Country Division finished third in the competition with 198 points while ‘B’ Division ended with 142 points.
Commissioner of Police, Leroy Brumell announced a $250,000 reward for Headquarters with the runner-up, ‘A’ Division getting $175,000 and Country Division $100,000; Brumell also doled out $50,000 each for Jonella Jonas, Alita Moore and Natasha Alder, whom shared the Champion Female Athlete award after outstanding performances.
Nadine Rodrigues was adjudged Runner-Up Champion Female and Kevin Bayley the Champion Male with Julio Sinclair as Runner-Up. Bayley was also announced as a candidate for $50,000 at Presentation Ceremony while Police Coach, Lyndon Wilson, attached to Headquarters, was also awarded $50,000 for leading his team to the comeback triumph.
Shawn Semple, who arguably had the performance of the day when he collected the relay baton in a distant third position in the 4x400m race and ran a blistering final leg to hand ‘A’ Division the win, also received a pledge of $50,000 from the Commissioner.
Meanwhile, Commander of ‘A’ Division, Derick Josiah told Kaieteur Sport that he will also give his team $100,000 for a sterling performance that challenged the dominance of Headquarters for two consecutive days before giving way on the final day.
In the competition, Moore easily won the Women’s 100m, clocking 12.2 seconds on the damp and heavy track. Rodrigues was second in 12.7s while Leota Bobb picked up third in 13.2s that steadied Headquarters ship with a clean sweep.
Moore then returned to capture the Women’s 200m in 26.3 to claim a sprint double. Rodrigues finished second to continue the ascendancy of Headquarters while ‘A’ Division’s, Shanna Thornhill was third.
Jonas ran away with the Women’s 1500m in 5:44.6, capturing a distance triple after winning the 800m and 3000m races earlier in the week. Shion Boyer finished second while Tisha Grimes was third in the race.
Semple clocked 10.9 seconds to win the Men’s 100m for ‘A’ Division while Keith Roberts took second in 11.2s; Derwin Eastman (11.4s) was third in the event.
Bayley left teammate, Nathaniel Giddings in his wake in the final 150m of the Men’s 1500m to pick up the win in a time of 4:18.9s. Giddings (4:21.2s) and ‘A’ Division’s Tyson Johnson (4:25.3) was second and third respectively.

Alder, a field event ace, contributed heavily to the points standing for Headquarters after winning the Women’s Shot Putt with a throw of 10.23m while Joan King–Brown was second with 8.75m and Latoya Rodney (8.45m) third.
Sinclair took the Men’s Shot Putt, out-throwing teammate, Ronald Payne with a throw of 13.04m with Payne (11.69m), both for ‘A’ Division. Cordell English (10.72m) was third.
In the Youth Club events, Kevin Abbensetts won the male 100m in a time of 11.6s while Tiffany Carto (13.0s) won the female version.
